This was the longest-running Western television series in history, having aired for a total of 20 seasons. The first episode aired on September 10, 1955, and the last episode aired on March 31, 1975, in the United States. CBS broadcast all of the episodes in the United States of America. ([4] It was first televised under the title “Gun Law” in the United Kingdom, where the show premiered.

To begin with, Gunsmoke was a half-hour television show that was shot in black-and-white. It started shooting in color in season 12 when the series was extended to an hour in length with season 7. It aired 635 episodes during the course of the show’s life, with 233 episodes lasting 30 minutes and 402 lasting 60 minutes. The programs lasted an hour and were shown in black and white on 176 occasions and in color on 226 occasions, respectively.

According to Nielsen ratings, during season two, Gunsmoke rose to become one of the top ten most-watched television shows in the United States, eventually reaching the top spot in the third season. Up until 1961, it held the top spot, and it continued to rank in the top 20 until 1964. Following a move in the show’s broadcast period from Saturday night to Monday night in 1967, the series regained popularity.

From then, Gunsmoke stayed in the top 20 for the following seven seasons, until slipping out in the last season. CBS canceled the series in May 1975, citing poor ratings. At the time, Alan Wagner, the network’s vice president at the time, said, “It’s better to get rid of a show one year too soon than it is to get rid of a program one year too late.” Six TV movies based on the series were produced and shown by CBS between 1987 and 1994.
