Terrible Towel Meme | In football, the Terrible Towel is a rally towel that is associated with the Pittsburgh Steelers, a professional American football club that competes in the National Football League (NFL). The Terrible Towel has gained widespread recognition; for example, enthusiasts have taken their Towel to prominent tourist destinations while on vacation.
The Towel has been transported to the summit of Mount Everest and even into space on the International Space Station, among other places. It is popularly regarded as a mascot for the Pittsburgh Steelers and as a symbol of the city of Pittsburgh.
The Pittsburgh Steelers took on the Jacksonville Jaguars on October 8, 2008, at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium in Jacksonville, Florida. The Jaguars were 2–2–0 at that point in the season, and they were feeling quite optimistic about the remainder of the season after a loss at home to their division rival Indianapolis Colts.
When the game entered the second half, it was very tight, and the Steelers were still hurting from a Mathis interception that was returned for a score. A few minutes after the start of the third quarter, Jaguars’ mascot Jaxson de Ville appeared on the field with a Terrible Towel, which he used to massage his armpits and buttocks. Immediately after that, the Steelers took control of the game and the Jaguars were defeated 26–21.
The proceeds from the sale of the Towel have earned more than US$6 million for Allegheny Valley School, which provides care for those who have mental difficulties as well as physical challenges. As the world’s first “rally towel,” the Terrible Towel is widely regarded as having paved the way for the development of similar goods to promote other sports teams.
There have been several variants manufactured, practically all of which are black and gold in color with the words “Myron Cope’s Official The Terrible Towel” emblazoned on the front in black and gold in color. To raise awareness of breast cancer, a pink Terrible Towel was unveiled in October 2009 to help raise funds. When the COVID-19 epidemic hit the United States in 2020, counterfeit rally towels were manufactured and sold on the secondary market. As of January 2021, a lawsuit against the company was still unresolved.

Despite playing at home against Pittsburgh’s third-string quarterback, Charlie Batch, the Ravens were defeated 23-20 by the Steelers two weeks later, on December 2, at Heinz Field. Despite losing four of their final five games, Baltimore would go on to win the AFC North and then go on to win the Super Bowl XLVII, earning the distinction of being the first and only team in NFL history to exhibit disrespect for the Terrible Towel and win the Super Bowl in the same season. In the summer before the 2014 season, Ray Rice was banned after a domestic violence incident, and he was later dismissed and has not been signed by any club since then.
Furthermore, the Ravens had made the playoffs in each of their first five seasons under John Harbaugh and Joe Flacco prior to their Super Bowl victory, but they have only made one playoff appearance (and only one winning season) in the following four seasons, albeit their lone playoff victory during that span came against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
